Deepfakes Threaten National Well-being; AI Outperforms Humans in Diagnostics; CT Task Force Recommends AI Regulation

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used and developed in various fields, from healthcare to politics. However, its growth also raises concerns regarding deepfakes, privacy, and regulation.

The Berkshire Eagle published an opinion piece warning about the dangers of AI deepfakes, which can spread misinformation and have profound implications on politics, civic life, and personal privacy. The author argues that AI only exacerbates the problem of contaminated social discourse.

In healthcare, AI technologies are showing remarkable potential in diagnosing clinical conditions, including cancer. BMJ published a study highlighting how AI can help bridge the equity gap towards inclusive diagnostics. An international team of scientists developed an AI technology for studying minority diseases and successfully applied it to identify possible causes of myasthenic-congenital syndromes.

Regarding regulation, Connecticut’s AI task force encourages using AI in government and the private sector while protecting consumers from potential harm. The task force recommends exploring the use of AI in various sectors while ensuring ethical considerations and privacy protection.

In Dubai, the Quality Group launched the Medical Excellence MENA Award and Artificial Intelligence MENA Award to recognize outstanding contributions in these fields. Submissions will be accepted starting March 1st, 2024.

AI can also help prevent infectious disease outbreaks by ensuring staff wear personal protective equipment correctly and managing day-to-day hospital activities such as medication prescription and cleaning. A new research review to be given at a pre-congress day for this year’s European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2024) will explore these possibilities.

Lastly, Nebraska state senators are debating if laws need to be made to regulate political ads and media that use artificial intelligence. The debate comes as AI becomes more prevalent in creating realistic-looking yet fake videos and images, potentially misleading voters.

In summary, AI is being developed and used in various fields, from healthcare to politics. While it shows promising results, there are concerns regarding deepfakes, privacy, and regulation. Policymakers and stakeholders must work together to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly, protecting consumers and maintaining the integrity of social discourse.
